Course description

Supporting Behaviour Change by Mikko offers a deep dive into the practical application of proactive and reactive strategies. Over the course of the training, you will move beyond simple “discipline” to understand the functions of behaviour—why it happens and how it can be changed effectively. From mastering techniques such as extinction and time-out to implementing targeted support programs for sensory issues (visual, tactile, proprioceptive) and teaching essential life skills, this course equips you with the professional tools needed to foster independence and emotional regulation in children.

  • Functional Analysis of Behavior: Understanding the root causes of behavior using the ABC model (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) and identifying the main functions of behavior.

  • Reactive Correction Strategies: Mastering ethical reduction techniques for challenging behaviors, including Extinction, Time-out, Response Cost, and Overcorrection protocols.

  • Sensory Correction Protocols: Strategies for differentiating between behavioral and sensory issues and regulating Visual, Tactile, Proprioceptive, and Vestibular systems.

  • Building Independence & Life Skills: Step-by-step methods for teaching daily living skills (e.g., dressing, tidying) to replace problem behaviors with constructive actions.

  • Designing Intervention Plans: Synthesizing knowledge to create a comprehensive Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that combines proactive environmental changes with effective reactive consequences.

Who this course is for

  • Specialists

Specialists and ABA practitioners seeking structured, ready-to-use protocols for supporting behaviour change and reducing challenging behaviour.

  • Educators

Educators working in inclusive environments who need practical methods to support learners with behavioural challenges.

  • Parents and caregivers

Parents and caregivers who need effective, science-based strategies to manage tantrums, aggression, or sensory sensitivities at home.

Problems we help you solve

  • “I don’t know how to respond when a child screams, hits, or refuses to cooperate.” – Learn clear approaches to responsive strategies such as blocking, redirection, and differential reinforcement.

  • “The child appears overwhelmed by lights, touch, or movement.” – Gain access to structured behavioural strategies for supporting sensory-related behaviours, including visual, tactile, and vestibular sensitivities.

  • “Punishments don’t work, and the behaviour keeps returning.” – Learn how to use extinction and functional behaviour assessment to address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

  • “We struggle with everyday routines like dressing or tidying up.” – Use step-by-step guides for teaching daily living and self-care skills.

Results after completion

By the end of this course, you will be able to analyse behaviour professionally and implement individualised support plans that respect the child’s needs while effectively reducing challenging behaviour.

  • Master responsive strategies: Use behaviour-reduction procedures such as extinction, time-out, response cost, and overcorrection in an ethical and effective manner.

  • Understand behaviour functions: Identify whether behaviour is maintained by attention, access to tangibles, escape from demands, or automatic reinforcement (self-stimulation).

  • Support sensory regulation: Implement specialized programs for tactile, visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular (gravity insecurity) regulation.

  • Teach independence: Apply protocols for teaching skills such as “dressing appropriately for the situation,” “keeping the closet tidy,” and “following multi-step instructions.”

  • Design effective interventions: Create data-driven plans that combine proactive environmental adjustments with appropriate consequences.
